Day 9

Ok, this post comes early because I'm on my lunch break and bored. I had to stop for gas today. The pictures say it all.

Days 7 and 8

Oftentimes I fail at things. I took pics yesterday, but then it got late and I didn't post. Then I spent pretty much all of today cleaning my apartment. I do have both days worth of photos though!

Day 7:
This is Annie, out female GHO (great horned owl). She has been with the zoo for something like 20 years, and is obviously much better behaved than my brand new Charlie. She's been flirting with the wild GHO's a lot lately since it's mating season. This usually consists of extra vocalizing and carrying a mouse around in her beak. It's really cute when she tries to hoot with her mouth full!

Day 8:
Today, my friend, coworker, and ex-roomie Shayna (pictured) took her cat and what belongings she could fit in two large suitcases and moved to Germany for the next year. She decided to take a hiatus from the zoo biz and become an au pair for a family in Oberhinkofen, Germany. I am going to miss her, both as a coworker and a friend. Her current roommate and I took her to the airport this morning at 6:30am to help with bags and see her off. I won't know how her flight was or if she got in okay until she posts something on Facebook. She canceled her US phone service, and it would cost waaaaaaaayy too much to text her Germany phone! I didn't hear of any plane crashes, so I'm assuming the flight was safe at any rate.

Day 6

Tonight, I went to my PetCo store's employee party. We went to Dave & Buster's for food and games. It was actually really fun! I got free food and games out if it, which is nice. Tonight's picture is part of what I bought with my ticket winnings.

Behold, a blast from my past!

Day 5

So I currently have two jobs, at the Phoenix Zoo, and at PetCo. The zoo is my intended career, PetCo is a means to making ends meet. I greatly dislike that job. I really like my job at the zoo, I get to do all kinds of awesome things. One of those things is the subject of today's photo. I work with the education, show, and outreach animals at the zoo, which means that we have to be able to handle our animals, and they have to be fine with it. Animals rarely come to us willing to be handled, so we have to work with them at it. Currently I am training a Great Horned Owl, getting him to chill the fuck out on the glove, being collected from his enclosure, being returned to it, etc. Eventually we'll work on crating, but for now, I'm just happy when he's sitting nicely!

Since you can't see his face in this one, today's post is a twofer!

Day 4

It was a zoo day today (as 4 of 7 days are) and I snapped this picture of a hedgehog. Bernie was being adorable in the exercise pen, exploring under some shredded paper. As I came to take the picture, he decided to start balling up, as hedgies do, and this is the result. I'm having fun with the effects on my phone!

Day 3

Sometimes, things that are actually creepy and kinda gross can be really cute. This was the case today when I checked on our Goliath bird eating tarantula at PetCo. For some reason we have this giant spider, and I don't know why. We do sell a fair number of tarantulas in this store, but not ones that get to the size of a dinner plate and sell for $100!

So I was checking on the animals this morning and the Goliath was using his fangs/mouth parts to clean his legs, and it was actually really cute. You may not think so, but trust me, had you seen it in action, you would have found the following picture a little less creepy!

Day 2

Second day and I'm already failing. I went to a public market last night, then met up with a friend, and was out till 1:30am, so I didn't get much time at my computer yesterday to write this. Also, my pic comes from the market, since nothing interesting happened at PetCo...and I kept forgetting/getting too busy to take a pic. There were all sorts of things for sale at the market. I got some bread, tangelos, onions, and pomegranate jelly. There were also plants for sale like this cactus.

Today, I will get a post up before midnight, I swear!

Day 1

In all honesty, I completely forgot I was going to start this whole photo-a-day project until I got home from work today. This is a shame, since my best pictures come from work; well, at the zoo anyway, not so much at PetCo. So, I remembered about this as I was sitting in my car, listening to the radio personality talk about what he's gonna give up for Lent. So I came inside, went out on my patio and took this.

When I bought this tomato plant, it was in one of those 3" containers, just a tiny little thing. The one good thing about Arizona weather is that it allows you to grow things all year. This tomato is HUGE now!

...Yeah, so it's been a while

I doubt there's anyone still watching my journal, since it's been pretty much vacant for the last year or so. Poor neglected journal, so sad! But that's what happens when your author works 6 days a week and spends more time reading/lurking than figuring out anything interesting to say. I still don't have anything interesting to say, but I thought I'd come out of hibernation and try.

I have been extremely stressed lately, for reasons I won't go into right now; and I think to that end, I need something to occupy myself. I have decided to give myself a photography challenge, and it starts tomorrow. Every day, I have to take at least one photograph (many will probably be from my phone) and I will post it here with a description.

Now, one may inquire as to why I would start this project in the middle of a month. No particular reason really, except it seemed like high time I do something. So tune back in tomorrow for photo #1!
